When Things Are Going Well, Stay Close

There is a particular pleasure in seeing something begin to work.

An idea takes shape. A conversation opens a possibility. Something we have been preparing for quietly begins to unfold.

We notice ourselves looking forward to the day. There is energy for the work, curiosity about what comes next and gratitude for the progress we can finally see.

I want to make room for those seasons here too.

We have spoken about trusting God when the way is uncertain, when integrity costs us something and when our hearts feel overwhelmed. But our relationship with Him also belongs in the days when we feel hopeful, the work is satisfying and there is good news to share.

We can bring Him our delight.

Remembering what we prayed for

Sometimes an answered prayer becomes ordinary so quickly that we barely recognise it.

The opportunity we hoped for becomes a responsibility on the calendar. The project we wanted to begin becomes a list of things to finish. The ability to do something we once found difficult becomes part of our normal working day.

There is nothing wrong with getting on with the work. But I think it is worth pausing occasionally to remember how we arrived here.

What did we ask God for? What were we unsure we could manage? Who helped us along the way?

Looking back may reveal encouragement we have already begun to overlook. Someone made time for a conversation. We learned something useful. A delay gave us room to prepare. We found enough courage to begin before we felt entirely ready.

I want to notice those things and be thankful for them.

Gratitude gives me a way to enjoy the present with an awareness of what has made it possible.

Telling God the good news

When something goes wrong, I usually know what I want to bring into prayer.

There is a concern to explain, help to ask for or a decision that needs wisdom.

When something goes well, I can be quicker to move on.

I thank God, then begin thinking about the next task. Yet I want to spend time with Him in the enjoyment too. I want to tell Him what I am glad about, what surprised me and what I am looking forward to.

A good conversation can become a prayer of thanks. So can a satisfying afternoon of work or the sight of something long in the making finally coming together.

James 1:17 speaks of every good and perfect gift coming from above. That passage encourages me to receive goodness with gratitude and remember the Giver.

There are ordinary pleasures in a working life that I do not want to take for granted.

Staying attentive as the work grows

Good seasons can become busy seasons.

More opportunities may mean more decisions. Progress may bring new expectations. Something that began quietly can start asking for more time and attention.

I want to remain thoughtful as that happens.

An open door still deserves consideration. A promising enquiry still needs clear terms. Enthusiasm can help me begin, but I also need judgment about what I can responsibly sustain.

Staying close to God gives me somewhere to bring those questions.

I can ask for wisdom when I am excited, as well as when I am afraid. I can pray about how to use an opportunity, how to treat the people involved and how to recognise the limits of my capacity.

There is care to take with good things too.

Letting gratitude shape how I lead

When work is going well, I want the people around me to experience some of the good in it.

That may mean acknowledging someone’s contribution properly. Making time to say thank you. Recognising that a successful outcome depended on more than the person whose name appears at the front.

It may mean becoming more generous with encouragement.

In business and leadership, we often give immediate attention to what needs correcting. We may spend less time naming what someone has done well. Yet a sincere word of appreciation can help a person understand that their effort has been seen.

I want to remember that.

If I have received support, patience or an opportunity, I can consider how to extend those things to someone else. A good season may create room to share knowledge, make an introduction or help another person develop.

I hope gratitude will make me more attentive to people.

Enjoying without rushing ahead

There can be a temptation to turn every good development into a demand for the next one.

If something works, we immediately ask how to expand it. If a goal is reached, we set another. If there is a positive response, we begin wondering whether we can repeat it.

Those questions have their place. But they can also make enjoyment surprisingly brief.

I want to learn to let a good moment be a good moment.

To appreciate what has happened without immediately measuring what it could become. To enjoy the work I have completed before deciding how much more I should do.

Ecclesiastes speaks of enjoyment in our labour as a gift from God. I find that a gentle invitation to receive the satisfaction available in today.

I can be ambitious and still pause.

I can hope for growth and still be thankful for the present beginning.

Bringing my whole life to Him

I want a relationship with God that has room for the full range of my experience.

There will be prayers spoken through tears. There will also be prayers full of excitement, gratitude and possibility.

I can bring Him the idea I cannot stop thinking about. The work I am enjoying. The small accomplishment that means more to me than someone else might understand.

He knows the history behind it.

He knows how long something has been in the making, how often I doubted myself and what it took to take the first step.

So when things are going well, I want to stay close.

I want to remain thankful, teachable and attentive to the people around me. I want to enjoy what has been entrusted to me and continue asking how to use it well.

Perhaps something is beginning to unfold in your life too.

I hope you will make room to recognise it. Share the good news with someone who will be glad with you. Thank the people who have helped. Bring your delight into prayer.

There is room for joy in our life with God.

A prayer

Lord, thank You for the good I am beginning to see.

Help me recognise the gifts I might otherwise hurry past. Thank You for the people, learning and opportunities that have helped bring me here.

As the work unfolds, keep me attentive to You. Give me wisdom to care for what has been entrusted to me and generosity towards the people who share in it.

Help me enjoy this season with gratitude. Let me bring You my delight as freely as I bring You my concerns. Amen.

A question to sit with

What is going well in my life or work that I want to pause and thank God for today?
